Are you doing this to take advantage of new features or new applications can run but you can close it scary, because you know, there are always some things that can go wrong. In this article, we will look for some of those potential problems and explains how you can prevent or solve these problems, if occur.

1: Lack of Hardware
Under normal circumstances, the new operating system requires more powerful than their predecessors hardware. System running an older operating system like, you can run a new one very slow or not at all, so be sure to check before you do the upgrade of the hardware requirements. You may need a faster processor, you almost always need more memory. Other components may need to be upgraded. For example, Windows Vista requires the correct video card supports Aero interface.

If you install a new operating system and found inadequate performance, you might be able to make the necessary hardware upgrades. However, if your computer is running the new operating system upgrade to the needs of several components which may be less expensive to buy a new computer. If the system is a laptop, it may be difficult to upgrade the hardware level, it will run the new operating system.

2: Installation errors and freezes
May be the worst case is when the installation process fails, the upgrade on the way.
One possible reason is lack of disk space. According to Microsoft's specifications, Vista Home Premium and will eventually need at least 15 GB of available space 40GB disk. You may be able to use less space to install but you may encounter problems.
This can also be caused by a hardware problem. For example, Vista seems to be a bad RAM module is more sensitive than XP.

Driver issues an operating system upgrade with all kinds of trouble, one of the most common causes. Just because you through the installation process and the operating system is running, it does not mean that things have not gone wrong. You may find that your sound card no longer works, or that you can not print the new operating system. This is usually a driver issue.
The first thing to do is to check for updated drivers for the hardware component vendor's web site. Unfortunately, vendors sometimes do not update their drivers with the new operating system , especially on the old device . Sometimes this is a technical issue, but between us cynics will note that they have a vested interest in forcing you to buy a new card.

4: Activation Error
Nothing more than installing a new operating system may be even worse, and then when you go to activate it, you do not have a genuine tell Windows? Microsoft's most recent operating systems, including Windows XP and Vista, use the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) technology, which requires activation. If you have not activated within 30 days Vista, it will enter a limited functionality mode where you can no more use Aero interface, you'll lose the other advanced features.

5: The application is not compatible
Another common thing goes wrong when upgrading the OS is that you can no longer run some applications. This may be mildly annoying if your favorite games will not work if a mission-critical business application can not run, but it can be a small disaster.

In some cases, you can get an uncooperative application works in compatibility mode. In Windows Vista, navigate to program's executable file and right-click it and select "Properties", then click the "Compatibility" tab. Select Run this program in compatibility mode check box. Then, in the drop-down box, select the operating system that are running.
If this does not work, another solution is to use virtual machine software such as Virtual PC or VMWare virtual machine running an operating system such as XP,. Installed on a virtual machine is not compatible with the application, you can use them on your Vista desktop a window. Please note that you need to have a license of the old operating system running in a virtual machine.

Of course, another option is to upgrade your application with Vista compatible version.
